A plague on both their houses

The fight between Trump and Musk is lasting longer than I expected. This article describes the leverage that each has and the harm that each can do to the other.

The. problem for Musk is that Trump has all the levers of government (especially the justice department) and a pliant Republican party at his disposal. Forced to choose between getting Trump’s endorsement and MAGA support for their election efforts and Musk’s money, they will opt for Trump. The fact that Musk spent $25 million on the race for the Wisconsin Supreme Court seat only to have his chosen candidate lose by double digits will make them think that he is a paper tiger and that his threats to fund opposing candidates in the primaries and general election (or even start a new political party) may not amount to as much as alienating Trump.

Musk mainly has his money (although that is considerable), his social media platform Twitter/X, and the companies like SpaceX and Starlink that the government is dependent upon. While Musk can harm the government by withdrawing the Dragon space program from NASA and not providing Starlink services to various parts of the world (like Ukraine), he will also be hurting himself since they provide a huge source of revenue in the form of government contracts. Meanwhile Trump does not give a damn about who else Musk hurts, even if he targets major US government programs. He only cares about his own power and money and ego.

On the other hand, there are others who argue that Musk poses a real threat to Trump.

Donald Trump says he is surprised and disappointed with Elon Musk over the messy public meltdown of their partnership. He also should be wary.

It’s not Musk’s ownership of one of the most influential social media platforms that should give the president pause. Nor is it the billionaire tech mogul’s status as the world’s richest man, with a recent history of bankrolling Republican causes.

It’s Musk’s stratospheric popularity with the Republican base, as revealed in the polls.

Musk is not about to overtake Trump himself as the dominant figure in the party, to be clear. But the jilted former “special government employee” is uniquely suited to become a chaos agent who could terrorize the GOP — potentially wreaking havoc on Trump’s legislative agenda and the party’s midterm election plans.

Musk’s tenure leading the Department of Government Efficiency captured the GOP’s imagination, even if it ended ingloriously. While Democrats and independents quickly soured on Musk’s leadership, Republicans are still enthralled.

In the most recent Economist/YouGov Poll, 76 percent of Republicans viewed Musk favorably, compared to just 18 percent who viewed him unfavorably. A late April New York Times/Siena College poll placed his favorability rating among Republicans at 77 percent.

Despite the furor over his slashing budgetary cuts, the scrutiny for DOGE’s secretive approach and the criticism for failing to deliver on his initial promises of $1 or $2 trillion in savings, Musk’s popularity with the GOP base has stayed fairly consistent.

That may change if Trump mounts a sustained attack on Musk.

Trump is still attacking Musk and I think that will not end until Musk publicly grovels before him, like so many other Republicans have done. How long that will take to happen is anybody’s guess. While I am enjoying watching these two awful people go at each other and wish that both could lose, I fully expect Trump to come out on top, even if somewhat battered.

Not to mention that he might potentially have backdoors in numerous government databases, and possibly all kinds of info (including banking, financial, medical, etc.) on a majority of the U.S. population.

Maybe not, but with all that “DOGE” bullshit, there was plenty of opportunity…

Many people are going to be in those files innocuously, as not every business associate of the man was also a criminal. Musk implies Trump’s involvement is much more damaging than mere business ties, which is very plausible, but then again Musk also accused a dive rescue team member of paedophilia simply for refusing Musk’s offer of help.

All the same, is anyone else dearly wishing for the release of the Epstein files…? I’d love it if a highly damaging leak appeared in the hands of a principled journalist.

i cannot fucking believe mvfk is popular with republicans. it’s been just one unbelievable thing after another for years and years now, reaching a fever pitch for the last several months, but this is surprising to me. they love shitler so much, how can they favor anyone who has been a problem for him in any way? defies reason, but what doesn’t now? and the fact they love the linty ballsack in the first place that uncharisma is a workable thing. idk.

oh the least scrupulous of a slew of interim heads of the social security administration basically admitted doge could copy the SSNs and bio details and bank information of every single person that gets benes, in a press release where he was trying to say it was cool because they don’t have access to edit that information. so yes, mfck is positioned to Dr. Evil the US with that information whenever he pleases.

Maybe one or both will have a “will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?” moment

Trump always claimed to be a billionaire, and now he will finally be one.
1: Trump had raised his price from $300m (Musk’s 2024 campaign price) to £400m (Qatar’s 2025 bid), and Trump now thinks that his price should be north of half a $billion.
2: Musk will look at that figure, and decide it would be slightly more cost-effective to create his own third party, just in time for the mid-terms. Probably AI-fuelled. Surprisingly popular with those who nod along with his Muskbots that “politics is broken, both parties are equally bad”.
Cynical take: Such a scenario would sink the Dem’s chances of doing anything useful after the mid-terms, and the winners would be a toxic quarrel of two fungible flavours of fascism. Just the right conditions to use any dissent to justify delaying cancelling your next general election.
It wouldn’t be what the fascists had originally planned, but any flavour of fascism is OK with them.

The enemy of my enemy … can still be my enemy. Best thing we can do is help them destroy each other.

    “The. Problem for Musk…”
Ha ha…it is confirmed, Mano, that you’re using a Mac to type your posts. Been plagued with this issue myself. Too lazy and/or absent minded go and change the keyboard settings to say “don’t convert double spaces into periods”.

    mastmaker @#9,

Is that why it was happening? I thought that it was because I’m a lousy typist and was hitting the period key by mistake.

    I have changed the settings.

    Thanks!

Musk might want to remember what happened to Mikhail Khodorkovsky or Jack Ma.

Money is great but having the imperium (executive power in government) usually beats dollars.

-He is sending the national guard to California hoping to provoke violence, then he can invoke the Insurrection Act.
    This is all a diversion.

    This is all a diversion.

I think you’re saying provoking violence in LA is a diversion from the stairheid rammy with Musk. But I’ve also seen the reverse confidently stated. It’s futile to speculate about which is a diversion from what, and falsely implies that Trump is capable of controlling his momentary sadistic impulses, let alone “4-dimensional chess”.
